Azilal rugs are tremendously creative in terms of modern concepts of design; combining irregular and abstract patterns with ancient Berber symbols. Originating from the Azilal region of the Atlas mountains near Marrakesh, azilal carpets are decorated with colored materials such as wool and cotton colored with vegetable dye or threads of recycled cloth. Azilals are works where every woman of the region tells her story. Rural life, motherhood and childbirth are some of the main topics. The inspiration of the weaver’s imagination turn native craft into genuine works of art, comparable to abstract paintings. Galleries around the world have begun to exhibit them. Their originality and immense strength in terms of color and concept have inspired artists such as Matisse, Paul Klee and Le Corbusier.
